Frequently Asked Questions.
How FaunaVera works, what “interpretation” means, supported species, pricing, privacy, scientific limitations and what comes next.
What is FaunaVera?
FaunaVera is an AI-powered animal communication app that analyzes short videos and provides human-readable insights into observable body language, vocalizations, movement and context.
I used VeriBark. What happens to my account?
VeriBark is now FaunaVera. Existing VeriBark users keep their account and analysis history in the updated app, so there is nothing to set up again: just update the app from the App Store or Google Play.
Which animals does FaunaVera support?
FaunaVera is launching with dogs, cats, horses, pigs, cows, goats, chickens, rabbits, sheep, donkeys, alpacas, llamas and ducks. Each species is interpreted through their own behavioral and communication context rather than applying a generic model to every animal. Filming an animal that is not on the list yet? Choose Other and FaunaVera will still give you a best-guess read.
Is FaunaVera literally translating animal language?
Not word for word. FaunaVera interprets observable communication signals and context. Voice of Animal turns the interpretation into human-readable language, but it should not be treated as a transcript of an animal's private thoughts.
Will FaunaVera let me communicate back with my animal?
Not in their own language, at least not yet. Right now, FaunaVera’s Tips suggest how to respond as a human: how to move, where to stand, when to give space and when to carry on. Companion and farmed animals have lived alongside people for thousands of years, and they are often far better at reading us than we are at reading them, so a calm, well-timed human response usually lands.
Talking back in a species’ own signals is something we are genuinely excited about, but it has to be done carefully and ethically, so that we never confuse, stress or mislead the animals we are trying to understand. It is in the works, and we will only release it when we are confident it is good for them.
What does FaunaVera analyze?
Depending on the species and what is visible or audible, FaunaVera can consider posture, orientation, movement, facial and head signals, ears, eyes, mouth, tail or body carriage, vocalizations, environmental context, your optional question, and profile information such as species, breed or type, age and sex.
Because each species has their own ethogram, the cues it looks for change with the animal: a horse’s head and neck carriage and hoof movement, a cow’s or pig’s ear and tail position, a goat’s stance and head posture, a chicken’s feather, comb, wing and head movements, or a cat’s whiskers and tail tip. The setting matters too — a stall, pasture, barn or yard reads differently from a living room — and so does whether other animals are in frame.
What if I pick the wrong species or breed?
FaunaVera checks for itself. Before anything is interpreted, it identifies the species and breed from the video, and if the clip shows a different animal from the one you picked, it reads the animal that is actually there. What you tell us is a helpful hint, but the video always has the final say.
What about animals that live in groups?
Herds, flocks and shared pens are all fine to film. In group settings the analysis focuses on one animal at a time. You can tell us which one in the optional context box, and if another animal in the clip shows signs of distress, the analysis will point them out too.
Can I upload an old video, or do I have to record in the app?
You can use an existing video from your library or record a new one. That makes FaunaVera useful both for revisiting moments you have always wondered about and for understanding something happening now.
Can I ask FaunaVera a specific question about the video?
Yes. When you submit a clip, you can add context or ask a question so the analysis can take your specific concern or curiosity into account.
What do I get after an analysis?
You receive an overall Interpretation, a playful Voice of Animal, practical Tips, and Ethogram Insights that explain the observable signals contributing to the interpretation.
What is an ethogram?
An ethogram is a structured catalog of observable behaviors used in animal-behavior research. FaunaVera uses species-specific behavioral knowledge to connect what appears in a video with relevant evidence and established ethological understanding.
How scientific is FaunaVera?
The current FaunaVera foundation contains 720 communication signals across 7 species, informed by 399 scientific studies spanning behavior, cognition, stress, facial-action coding and species-specific communication research. Each species is interpreted through their own ethogram rather than a generic model, and the signal catalog and source base grow as new species and new research are added.
How accurate is FaunaVera?
Animal behavior is contextual and probabilistic, so no video-based system can know an animal's internal state with perfect certainty. FaunaVera is designed to identify plausible patterns from observable evidence, explain the signals behind an interpretation, and become less confident when the relevant evidence is weak or missing. Performance can vary with species, video quality, visibility, audio and context. That is why we don’t quote a single accuracy figure: one number would hide how much results depend on the species and the clip.
What if I want to understand an animal that is not in FaunaVera’s ethogram yet?
We expand our ethograms constantly, but not every species has been studied, and even well-studied species have signals science has not described yet. If your clip shows a species or a signal our ethograms do not cover, FaunaVera will still do its best: it researches the published science on that species, favoring peer-reviewed studies and veterinary, zoo and wildlife sources, and uses closely related species only as a comparison. Those results are marked with an “AI interpretation” banner and their confidence is capped at 50%, so take them with a grain of salt.
You can also tell us which animals you want next.
Does FaunaVera learn my individual animal's history?
Not yet. Analyses currently use the submitted video, profile information and any context you provide. Using an animal's longer-term history to support increasingly individualized interpretation is part of the longer-term direction.
Does FaunaVera work for every breed, type and age?
FaunaVera is designed to account for morphology and life stage where relevant, but visible signals can look different across breeds, body types and ages. Ear shape, tail type, coat, facial structure and other physical features can affect what the camera can reliably observe.
What if an important body part is not visible?
FaunaVera can only analyze cues that are present in the clip. Clear video showing as much of the animal as possible generally provides more behavioral information than a tightly cropped, dark or obstructed video.
Does the video need sound?
No, but sound can add useful information because vocalizations are one of the communication channels FaunaVera can analyze. A silent clip can still contain useful visual signals.
Is FaunaVera veterinary advice?
No. FaunaVera provides AI-generated informational insights and is not a medical or veterinary diagnostic tool. Contact an appropriate veterinary professional if you are concerned about pain, illness or a medical change.
Is FaunaVera a substitute for a trainer or behaviorist?
No. FaunaVera can help you observe and learn, but it does not replace a qualified trainer, veterinary behaviorist, ethologist or other appropriate professional, especially for significant fear, aggression, safety or welfare concerns.
Can FaunaVera tell me whether a situation is safe?
No. FaunaVera does not assess safety or risk. Always use appropriate supervision, your own judgment and professional support where needed.
How much does FaunaVera cost?
Your first video analysis is free. After that, you can start a 7-day free trial. FaunaVera Pro is currently planned at $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year, with local store pricing potentially varying by country or currency.
How do I cancel my subscription or free trial?
Subscriptions and trials are billed and managed by Apple or Google, so you cancel through your store account: on iPhone, go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions; on Android, open Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Cancel before the trial ends if you don’t want to be charged. Deleting the app on its own does not cancel a subscription.
Your subscription stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for. Refund requests are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies.
Which languages does FaunaVera support?
The app supports English, Swedish, Finnish, Spanish, German and French.
Is FaunaVera available on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The app is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.
What happens to the videos I upload?
Your videos are used to produce your analysis and are handled according to our Privacy Policy and your consent choices. Unless you opt out, uploads may also be used to train and improve FaunaVera’s models. You can opt out at any time in App Settings, and the choice applies to future uploads. You can delete videos, analyses or your whole account whenever you like.
How do I delete my account and data?
In the app, go to My Profile → Delete My Data and follow the on-screen steps. You can also email support@faunavera.org from the address linked to your account. More about deleting your account.
Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription, so cancel that separately.
Will FaunaVera support more species?
Yes. Companion and farmed animals are chapter one. The longer-term roadmap extends toward songbirds, aquatic animals, insects, wildlife and many other species, with each new group requiring their own scientific foundation and communication framework. See which species could come next.
